Meet Our Team
The team is comprised of physicians with post-graduate training and significant experience in public health, epidemiology and management. The team has its roots in the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital Nigeria. Whilst working for the hospital, the team formed an informal alliance with the aim of promoting quality research into high burden tropical health conditions. The focus of this group has since been broadened.
Dr Akaninyene Otu is an infectious diseases physician and public health professional with diverse experience in clinical medicine, research, programme development and implementation. Akaninyene holds a Senior Lecturer position in the College of Medical Sciences, University of Calabar, Nigeria. He is also the founder and Executive Director of the Foundation for Healthcare Innovation and Development (FHIND). He received specialist training both in Nigeria and the United Kingdom and has worked alongside leading clinicians and researchers in infectious diseases and public health. Akaninyene’s interests are in pragmatic approaches to managing infectious disease outbreaks, tuberculosis, hepatitis, sepsis, invasive fungal infections, medical education and operational research in order to develop, pilot, evaluate and trial health interventions within low- to middle-income country settings. Dr Ofem is an accomplished Clinician in practice with professional MPH, Fellowship in Endocrinology, and a certificate in Clinical Research from Harvard, who has demonstrated leadership experience in human and material management, leading peers and superiors in building teams within a research-focused and training environment. Deploying knowledge and skills gathered from over 28 years’ experience in medical practice. He has a good teamwork ethic and compliance with ethical standards. He also has excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work under pressure to achieve set objectives within specified timelines. Dr. Emmanuel had his medical degree from the University of Calabar and a specialist fellowship in Nephrology from the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria. He also obtained a postgraduate certificate in Medical Education from the University of Dundee, the United Kingdom and a Master of Science in Clinical Epidemiology at the University of Stellenbosch, Cape Town, South Africa. He is currently an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Calabar, Deputy Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee in charge of training and research at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital as well as the Consultant in charge of the MTN Foundation’s Haemodialysis unit at the General Hospital, Calabar. Dr Uduak is a health care professional with a medical/postgraduate degree and postgraduate clinical experience in all aspects of Internal Medicine with specialization in Neurological disorders. He is recognized for his honesty and ability to work with a diverse group of persons in a team. Dr.Victor is a Senior Lecturer on the Department of Internal Medicine of Uyo, Nigeria. He provides service in the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH) as an Honorary Consultant Respiratory Physician and sessional Consultant at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UUTH). He is the Clinical Team Leader of the Institute of Human Virology (IHVN) HIV treatment programme of UUTH, and focal person for the MDR tuberculosis treatment centre in the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital. Dr Onwusaka is an experienced public health professional and medical demographer. She is in academia and lectures in the Department of Public Health, University of Calabar, Nigeria.
As a researcher and data analyst with over 10 years of experience in public health research and data analysis, she has developed surveys, analysed small and large data sets, developed research products including journal publications, manuscripts, conference papers and technical reports. She has also worked in international development and has consulted for various indigenous and international organizations including the world bank.
